On April 13, 2010 a meeting regarding the present condition of the architectural monument of the world significance, the radio-broadcasting tower in Shabolovka Street, Moscow – the Shukhov Tower — took place in the Committee for the cultural heritage of Moscow.

Famous British architect Sir Norman Foster has become the latest voice to join calls to save the iconic Shukhov radio tower.

Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov was one of the greatest structural engineers of the early Twentieth Century and unquestionably the leading engineer of his era in Russia. He pioneered the use of entirely new structural systems, creating hyperboloid structures of double curvature whose lightness and geometric complexify defy the imagination, even in the computer age.

The radio tower in Shabolovka Street is the world known and one of the most significant masterpieces of architecture of the beginning of the XX century. The creator of the tower, Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov, was a leading inventor of the contemporary building structures. Shukhov’s achievements may be compared only with the achievements of Gustave Eiffel, Robert Maillart or Eugene Freyssinet.

Yesterday the “Shukhov Tower” Foundation for the development of science, culture and art together with the Moscow department of the Union of artists of Russia and the Moscow Nobility Assembly held a press-conference devoted to the 175th anniversary of the Great Russian Maecenas Yuriy Stepanovich Nechaev-Maltsov (1834-1913), preservation of his heritage, renaming and restoring of the Museum of Fine Arts (now GMII after A.S. Pushkin) granted by him to Russia.

It is necessary to rescue the world’s first hyperboloid tower! The Shukhov tower in Polibino, Dankovskiy area in Lipetsk region is the only one preserved of the world’s first steel lattice shells invented and constructed according to the projects of V.G. Shukhov for the 1896 All Russian industrial and art exhibition in Nizhniy Novgorod. The “Shukhov Tower” Foundation urges you to make a donation for the anti-breakdown repair of the world’s first hyperboloid lattice tower!

On April 12, 1961 Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin made the world’s first flight of a man to space and became the first cosmonaut of the planet of Earth. Two years prior to the 50th anniversary of this great event it makes sense to carry out preparation of a PR-campaign reminding the world community about the flight of Yu. A. Gagarin. First of all, there must be made an advanced Internet portal about the preparation and the execution of the first space flight. It is necessary to prepare the publication of the multilingual photo albums and to make a high-class documentary.

In 2007, under the initiative of the Union of Scientific and Engineering Associations (USEA) of Russia, Moscow State Technical University n.a. N.E. Bauman (MSTU) and the Shukhov Tower Foundation the monument to the ingenious Russian engineer Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov will be erected in the Sretensky boulevard in Moscow.

The initiative has found support in the Government of Moscow. The Moscow mayor Yuriy Mikhailovich Luzhkov has made a decision to erect the monument to Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov.

The financial support is needed to erect the monument.

We will be grateful to everybody who participates in immortalizing the memory of our great compatriot.
